The realms of Joo Chiat (Part 1)

This entry isnt suppose to be in parts, unfortunately my battery went flat while I was shooting. Will continue with part 2 and realms of Katong (East Coast Rd).
Actually Joo Chiat is a wonderful place, with beautiful carvings on buildings dating back to the Peranakan culture. well, i dun think people still practice the Peranakan culture anymore, looking at the elderly at Katong, who still wear the traditional Peranakan "baju", which means clothing in malay.

So this is what i took at Joo Chiat Rd, while cycling down (lazy to go on foot though.. haha..)

Signboard

Carvings on the walls

shophouses

Beautiful tiles

For sale... guess how much this shophouse cost??

And so, this is my last shot before my battery died.. stay tuned for part 2! hehe!

Hi Kenneth,
good to see your blog about Joo Chiat. I'm curious to your comment about the lack of presence of Peranakan culture in Joo Chiat. As you can imagine, most people do not wear their traditional dress daily as they are reserved for significant events and family occasions. The outward show of cultural identity through traditional costumes is only 1 way of several forms of cultural expressions. Just as in Penang, Malacca or Phuket, you will hardly see Peranakan Chinese wearing traditional dress daily.
Think you need to dig beneath the surface on this one.
